Ms. Krista let go of my shoulder and let me alone to face the rusty red door of the music lab. The clatter of Ms. Krista's heels echoed down the long brick hallway. She made me nervous. Nothing bad has ever come out of music except for broken hearts. I twisted the tarnished knob of the door and slid in the tiny gap. My thoughts ran a mile a minute when I saw two government officials sitting inside. They were standing behind a young man who was sitting in a chair. His head hung down to his chest, like he's been crying. My music lab teacher, Mr. Crow, was standing nervously in the back corner. His fingers rapped against a random electronic keyboard. I've never seen the young man before; I have to be in trouble some how. Mr. Crow approached me with sorrowful eyes. "Bear, put this on," he whispered to me. His palm opened up to reveal a promise bracelet. Promise bracelets were worn when a promise was made that was not to be broken. Ever. The promise is sealed inside the confines of the golden metal of the bracelet and seals to your wrist. If the promise is broken, it slowly kills you. The only way for a promise bracelet to be broken, is by the sacred key that has been made from the same metal. I've never seen a promise bracelet in my life before. Who knew my first time would be the time I had to wear one? I slipped it over my tanned skin and it conformed to the shape of my wrist. One of the government officials stepped forward then. "Bear, do you promise to keep this conversation out of your public life?" "Yes." "Do you promise to never divulge the actions performed today to anyone? And to comply with every action we instruct you to?" He asked again. "Yes." He faded back behind the boy again and the bracelet glowed. It shined brighter than the stars that shone in the night sky. It slowly faded, faded into an invisible promise. I still felt it's weight on my wrist but it was now invisible to the eye. "It was a mistake on the governments part, really." The other official stepped forward now, speaking directly to me. "That's why we need to keep it out of the public. Bear, you are the most advanced music student here, that's why we've called you down. You see here-" he laid his hand on the boy's shoulder-" Madison doesn't have a song. He's in need of one, and you, Bear, are to make him one." The inside of my body radiated heat. How could this lonely boy, Madison his name was, not have a song? Sixteen years of his life have been drained; he could have found his soulmate by now. "Okay," I managed a whisper. Madison finally lifted his head with unwelcomed tears. He seemed to be heartbroken, but I was strangely attracted to him. "As you know, the song has to be majorly unique. It's difficult now with his older age to make him a song because he cannot be matched with the wrong person." The non-speaking official escorted Madison into a different room. Some part of me believed that he wasn't supposed to hear the next bit of information that I received. "The song you are to make must be a broken one." Here do you think this is going? (:
